Strabane seniors defeat league leaders and youth teams advance to League Cup

Tuesday 20 January 2026 23:11

IT was a fantastic week for Strabane Rugby Club with success for its senior and junior teams.

Both the U14s and U16s have been crowned champions in their respective leagues and now progress into the League Winners Cup next weekend.

"With home fixtures against Instonians RFC and Carrickfergus RFC, the club and parents can look forward to a really enjoyable day showcasing the outstanding progress of our youth teams," a club spokesperson said.

"Adding to the momentum, the 1st XV produced an excellent away victory against Virginia RFC, who were top of the table, narrowing the deficit to just one point.

"With a number of clubs still in the title race, it promises to be an exciting run-in to the end of the season."

The 1st XV will play host to another key fixture in the title race when they entertain Donaghadee at Bradley Way on Saturday, with kick-off at 2.30pm.

The 2nd XV were also in action, losing 34–21 to a very experienced Ballynahinch RFC 5th XV in the McCambley Cup at Bradley Way, but the performance was very encouraging.

The club spokesperson continued: "The lads really enjoyed a strong, competitive game played in great spirit, which will stand them in good stead going forward.

"The 18s sacrificed their league campaign to supply players to the 1st XV, yet still fulfilled their Provincial Division 2 fixtures and have given a strong account of themselves.

"They now also enter cup competitions with high hopes.

"All in all, an extremely encouraging few days for Strabane RFC."
