STRABANE Rugby Club has announced the appointment of Stephen Orr as its new club and school development officer.
"Stephen takes on this important role with a clear passion and vision: to grow the game of rugby in our community, particularly among young people," the club said.
"Working closely with Ruan de Beer, Stephen will be leading a new initiative aimed at creating a Schools Cup competition, involving several local schools.
"This exciting programme is designed not only to develop rugby skills, but also to foster teamwork, discipline and highlight the lifelong physical and mental health benefits that come with participation in sport."
In addition to his development role, he will also be taking charge of the 2nd XV and has plans to establish an U20s team in the near future.
"This initiative will play a vital role in bridging the gap between youth and senior rugby, providing a clear pathway for talented young players to transition and thrive at senior level," the club spokesperson added.
Orr brings with him a wealth of experience both on and off the field.
A former player with the City of Derry senior squad, he retired at the age of 36 - on the day he proudly captained the club’s 2nd XV to a memorable cup victory at Ravenhill.
Following his playing career, he has been heavily involved in coaching across all levels.
He has coached minis, youth teams and U20s at City of Derry, and for the past 12 years, he has worked with all age groups at Foyle College, helping develop both rugby ability and character in young athletes.
Away from the pitch, he is a mental health professional with over 30 years of experience, bringing a unique and valuable perspective to the club.
He is committed to using sport - rugby in particular - as a tool to help young people build mental resilience, find social connection, and develop strong support networks within their community.
"Holding a range of coaching badges and deeply passionate about player development, Stephen is the ideal person to help take Strabane Rugby Club forward," the club spokesperson added.
"We are excited for what lies ahead and confident that with Stephen’s leadership, the future of rugby in Strabane and the surrounding area is in excellent hands.
"Welcome to the club Stephen!"
