'Married' men claim Cricky Hamilton Memorial Cup victory

THE second Cricky Hamilton Memorial Cup took place on New Year's Day.

The game was organised by Strabane Rugby Club in memory of the late Christopher 'Christy' Hamilton, also known as 'Cricky'.

The father-of-four, of Lisdoo Road, Strabane, passed away suddenly at home in September 2023 after he suffered a heart attack.

A former player and captain of Strabane Rugby Club, the club held the tournament at Bradley Way on New Year's Day featuring a 'Singles' versus 'Married' match.

A large crowd of spectators turned out in support of the event to see the 'Married' men clinch victory, a reversal of last year's inaugural competition.

This was followed by an evening of entertainment and a raffle in Strabane Cricket Club, with all funds raised going towards the club's fundraising campaign which has been initiated to help it safeguard its future and finance much-needed new facilities at the former school site on Liskey Road.

A club spokesperson said: "A huge thank you to Joanne Hamilton and family for the unbelievable amount of work put in for the events.

"An absolute fantastic day start to finish with some fantastic prizes won and lots of money raised to held build our future at Strabane RFC."

Mr Hamilton's family have also extended their thanks to all those who organised the day and to all those who supported it in any way.

The club's 1st XI men were also in action on Saturday when they faced Civil Service in a Championship Three encounter, coming away winners on an emphatic 66-0 win.
