STRABANE Triathlon Club (STC) athlete, John McDermott, ticked off his first major marathon on Sunday, November 2 in New York.

Having already completed one full distance Ironman, one 70.3 Ironman and four back-to-back marathons this year alone, John set himself the goal of soaking in the atmosphere of the Big Apple - and it did not disappoint.

The challenging New York City course, with its rolling bridges and relentless undulations, tested every runner’s resolve but that didn’t phase McDermott.

Between the live bands, DJs, dancers and an estimated two million spectators cheering the runners through all five boroughs, John thrived on the energy and excitement from start to finish.

Among almost 60,000 participants, he proudly waved the Irish flag high and all the way home for Strabane Tri Club, soaking up an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s most iconic races.

"From everyone at Strabane Triathlon Club, massive congratulations to you, John," a club spokesperson said.

"Your dedication is truly inspirational. We would wish you a restful few weeks ahead, but unsurprisingly you have some big events still to tick off before the New Year.

"The club wishes to pay a special thanks to Triathlon Ireland, Sport NI, Sport Ireland and Derry City and Strabane District Council for their continued support as well our sponsors Conway Plumbing, Miller Wholesale Ltd., AGL Chartered Accountants, CAS Construction Group, Frylite Solutions, and Parkland 33 who have assisted us financially throughout the year ensuring that the club continues to thrive."
