Councillor welcomes steps to improve conditions for Colman Fold residents

A STRABANE councillor has welcomed steps being taken by Radius Housing to improve conditions for residents of Colman Fold in Strabane.

The residential space on Melmount Road offers apartment style accommodation specially designed for over 55s who want to live independently with the reassurance of 24-hour support.

Following representations by his party, Sinn Féín's Brian Harte says Radius Housing has completed some upgrade work to the facility.

Councillor Harte explained: "In April I was approached by a number of residents in relation to the overall condition of Colman Fold.

"I met with residents and they outlined their concerns and what they thought could be improved.

"As a result I contacted Radius Housing to request a meeting to discuss their concerns.

“In June senior managers from Radius Housing, Maolíosa McHugh (MLA) and I, attended a meeting with residents, where they spoke very passionately on areas that they believe could be improved.

“Following on from this meeting and after quite a bit of correspondence and lobbying from myself, Radius Housing agreed to update and refresh the Common Room which residents felt was in a bad state and not a very pleasant place to relax and socialise."

That work has now been completed, and councillor Harte says he has requested a full refurbishment of the entire building.

The local councillor says the housing association has confirmed maintenance work is programmed for the next financial year.

"I called in this week to see the updated and improved Common Room," he continued.

"It was great to catch up with residents and see the place they call home looking a lot better.

“I also have asked Radius Housing to do a full refurb of the entire building.

"They have stated that this is to be scheduled into their maintenance programme for 2026/27.

"I will continue to lobby Radius Housing so that the refurb works are kept to the fore in their plans.”
