CASTLEDERG-based Sinn Féin councillor, Caroline Devine, has welcomed progress on the planned redevelopment of Castlederg's Mitchell Park.
Members of council’s Health and Community Committee were recently asked to approve a Wayleave Agreement in favour of Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), to upgrade an underground cable through a portion of Mitchell Park, which will service the new floodlighting for the 3G Multi Sports Pitch.
The completed playing pitch will accommodate “competitive standard soccer matches at all levels, a GAA junior size pitch and mini-sized soccer pitches, suitable for youth football and recreational play,” the council website states.
The £3 million re-development, funded by the UK Government, also includes plans for a coach education room, additional parking, greenway and a new outdoor trim trail, which will be built adjacent to the new pitch.
Councillor Devine proposed approval of the agreement with NI Electricity and welcomed news that the installation of floodlights was progressing.
She added: “Floodlighting is essential to open it up, so happy to propose it.”
The proposal was ratified at last week's monthly meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council.
