AS Halloween approaches, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is urging everyone to celebrate safely and avoid turning spooky fun into a real-life emergency.
With costumes, trick-or-treating, decorations, fireworks and sparklers all adding to the excitement, NIFRS is reminding the public that a few simple steps can help prevent accidents and save lives.
NIFRS Group Commander Jonathan Gamble said: "Halloween is a night for fun with friends and family, but it also comes with increased fire and safety risks.
"By taking simple precautions, you can significantly reduce these risks.
"We want everyone to enjoy the celebrations without any tragedies spoiling them.
"By planning ahead, such as using battery-operated candles and inspecting electrical decorations for any faults, you can help ensure that Halloween is remembered for all of the right reasons.
"At this time of year, fireworks and sparklers are very popular but can be very dangerous.
"Always follow the firework safety code, ensuring they are 'CE' marked to meet EU requirements.
"Remember to use fireworks in a safe, clear area, keeping children and pets well away. Sparklers can also cause serious injury, especially without proper supervision, as they burn at very high temperatures.
"Never give them to children under the age of five and always wear gloves when using them.
"Choose costumes made from flame-resistant materials, avoid long trailing fabrics that could catch fire, and ensure children are visible by carrying glow sticks or torches.
"If a costume catches fire, remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL to put the flames out quickly.
"Don't let a night of fun become a nightmare. Keep the tricks playful, the treats sweet, and the night safe."
