A PETITION has been launched calling for Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) to establish a walking path at the GAA club grounds in Glenmornan.

Entitled 'Urge DCSDC to support funding for walking path at Owen Roes Leckpatrick GAC', the petition, which is available on the Change.org platform, has gained over 330 signatures to date.

It calls for a safe walking route around the sports club, highlighting serious pedestrian safety issues and limited access to safe routes for residents in the area.

"Residents of Glenmornan face a daily challenge when it comes to safely enjoying a walk," the petition states.

"The current walking routes are primarily on narrow country roads without footpaths, posing significant safety hazards, especially as daylight fades.

"The need for a dedicated walking path has become increasingly apparent, one that can provide a safe and dependable area for community members of all ages to exercise, socialise, and improve their wellbeing.

"Establishing a walking path at Owen Roes Leckpatrick GAC is not just a matter of convenience; it's a crucial step towards enhancing community health and safety.

"A walking path would cater to the needs of walkers, joggers and families, becoming an asset that encourages a more active lifestyle while minimising the risks associated with navigating country roads.

"Investment in this kind of infrastructure is more than a financial commitment; it's a commitment to the future health, safety, and cohesion of our community.

"Studies from organizations like the World Health Organization highlight that accessible walking paths contribute significantly to enhanced physical health, reduced stress levels, and stronger community ties.

The petition adds: "We urge the Derry City and Strabane District Council to prioritise the funding and construction of a walking path at Owen Roes Leckpatrick GAC.

"By doing so, they would not only ensure a safer environment but also foster an inclusive community spirit where residents can engage with their environment positively."

At the time of going to press yesterday (Tuesday), the petition had attracted 331 sigantories, with the wider community are urged to lend their support to the cause.

"Your voice matters. The addition of a walking path is a significant enhancement that supports both individual health and community well-being," the petition adds.

"Sign the petition to show your support for a safer and healthier Glenmornan."
