A LOCAL cricket club is hosting a special memorial night this weekend in memory of a lifelong member who passed away following a lengthy battle with illness.
Colin McGettigan (52), of Dennett View, passed away at Altnagelvin Hospital on September 21.
A hugely popular and highly-respected figure within the locale, tributes poured in for the father-of-three who was known to many as 'Shaker'.
Colin and his family are synonymous with cricketing in the North West.
A talented all-rounder with Burndennett Cricket Club he excelled on the field of play and is regarded as one of the district's most talented cricketers.
Paying tribute following his death, the club said his passing had left an "irreplaceable void in the hearts of those at Burndennett CC and the wider cricket community across the North West region."
The poignant tribute added: "His indomitable spirit and resilience in the face of adversity were truly remarkable...
“Shaker wasn’t just a cricket enthusiast, he was a cherished friend to many.
"His infectious enthusiasm and warm camaraderie made him a hugely popular figure, not only at Burndennett CC but throughout the entire North West cricket community.
"He left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered."
On Saturday night, family, friends and team-mates of Colin will gather at the club for a special event in his memory.
As well as live music, the club will also be unveiling achievements and photographs from Colin's playing years.
"Everyone is welcome," a club spokesperson said.
"We encourage past players over the years to attend to meet old friends and teammates, to catch up.
"Hope to see you all there."
The event gets underway at 8pm with further details on the club's Facebook page.
