A new era dawns for Newtownstewart Golf Club

THE members of Newtownstewart Golf Club have taken an historic step forward in the running and management of the club.

This 2025 golf season marks the start of a new management structure within the club as well as the introduction of a new membership system.

This is the first time in the club’s 111 years history that the ladies and gents will be jointly managing and running Newtownstewart Golf Club. It follows the introduction of what is known as the ‘One Club’ model which is aimed at promoting equality for all its members.

Club membership fees have been simplified offering members the choice of playing five days or seven days.

This option gives members the opportunity for much more flexibility in how and when they can play their round of golf as well as giving all members an equal standing in relation to how the club is run.

Welcoming the changes at last week’s well attended Annual General Meeting (AGM), newly-appointed chairman, John Armstrong, said: "We are delighted that Newtownstewart Golf Club has become a ‘One Club’ and the turnout of men and ladies tonight shows the support for this momentous occasion.

"We have planned this for a few years and consulted widely with our members.

"We took on board all views, both positive and negative, and are excited to have reached the point of electing a new joint management committee.

"It also means that we now have a more inclusive membership which will ensure improving the future development of the club.”

The new joint captains for 2025, Maxine McGowan and Seamus Byrne, are both looking forward to the year ahead.

They acknowledge that Newtownstewart Golf Club is in a unique position in that the men and ladies have always shown huge respect for each other and have worked closely together all through the years.

Being ‘One Club’ will only help strengthen the bonds and co operation that already exists and can ultimately benefit the Club.

Maxine McGowan said: "Newtownstewart Golf Club has always been renowned for men and ladies working together and this is just a culmination of that co operation.

"I have no doubt that members are looking forward to a new chapter in our history and most importantly to continue playing and enjoying their golf on what is a beautiful course.”

Seamus Byrne added: "This is huge and positive step forward for us as a club and I would like to thank all those members who helped in the planning and consultation process.

"I know that members will embrace the changes and will continue to work at ensuring that the club grows from strength-to-strength.

"The future is looking bright for Newtownstewart Golf Club.”

This is a golden opportunity for new members to join the club and everyone will be made very welcome.

Golf societies and other clubs are also encouraged to come along and enjoy what Newtownstewart Golf Club has to offer.
