STRABANE Sigersons stalwart Liam Sweeney has been awarded a Credo Award in recognition of his 25 plus years service to the GAA in the town.
The awards, which recognise the long service by volunteers across clubs, were hosted at Tyrone GAA Centre, Garvaghey, last Wedesday.
Recipients were presented with either a gold or silver pin by former GAA president, Aogán Ó Fearghail, Tyrone GAA chairperson, Martin Sludden and former Tyrone chairperson, Roisin Jordan.
Following the presentations, Conall Ó Máirtín hosted an insightful Q&A session with Aogán, Paul Devlin and Aoibhinn McHugh.
Liam was among the club members from north Tyrone acknowledged.
A Sigersons spokesperson said: "Liam Sweeney has been involved with Strabane Sigersons since the Sigersons club was formed initially as a youth club in 1976 and has been a player at every level from youth right through to playing at senior level for many years right until his mid 40s.
"In 1991, he captained Sigersons to the Tyrone Junior Football Championship final, where they narrowly lost out to Aghaloo.
"Liam also coached and managed at every level within the club.
"He also played with Tyrone Vocational Schools, Tyrone Under 21 and Maste's teams over the years.
"Apart from his playing and coaching career, Liam was club treasurer during the period of the purchase and development of our club grounds Páirc Mhic Sioghair during the early 1990s and just recently stepped down from the role as chairperson of the club.
"He is a passionate Gael who is widely known and has made a massive contribution to the GAA in Strabane and Tyrone over the years.
"Well deserved Liam."
