A NEW pilot programme designed to bolster clubs in north Tyrone, addressing the unique challenges while seeking to build on the region’s proud tradition of producing stars for the county team, concluded for 2025 at Strabane Sigersons.
The North Tyrone Skill Development Programme, delivered by Tyrone GAA’s Coaching and Games team over the past six weeks, is designed to support clubs in the North Tyrone area by focusing on player development at U14 level, while also providing valuable learning opportunities for club coaches.
The aim is to raise standards, improve retention and strengthen clubs at a time when rural depopulation poses challenges for many communities.
A spokesperson for Strabane Sigersons said: "On Wednesday it was the turn of Páirc Mhíc Sioghair to host the group.
"We would like to thank Roger Keenan for his work over the past few months in getting this programme off the ground.
"Thanks to Paul O'Hagan for a great session on Wednesday assisted by Tyrone coach, Fiachra McNulty and Tim Harney who did great work with the goalkeepers.
"This is a welcome step in North Tyrone by the County Board and we look forward to initiatives like this continuing in the future.
"Thanks to Michelle Lynch and Claire McCool who provided refreshments for the coaches and players."
The programme delivered key opportunities, including:
- Enhanced Player Development: Players in their final year of Under 14 football will refine technical, tactical, and teamwork skills in a high-quality coaching environment.
- Best Practice Exposure: Young players will train and compete alongside peers, experiencing top-tier coaching methods.
- Coach Development: Club mentors will upskill by observing and working with a focused player group.
- Raising Standards: The initiative aims to elevate playing quality and retention rates across the region.
The participating clubs included Aghyaran, Castlederg, Clan na nGael, Glenelly, Greencastle, Gortin, Naomh Eoghan, Owen Roes, Strabane and Urney.
