A YOUNG member of the Sollus Highland Dancers has been received an award dedicated to the memory of esteemed community worker, Kenny McFarland.
The Newbuildings man, who was aged in his 65th year, passed away peacefully at Altnagelvin Hospital on December 9, 2024.
He was best known for his role in the Londonderry Bands Forum and was also a chairperson of the North-West Cultural Partnership.
Mr McFarland was also instrumental in the establishment of the Sollus Centre in Bready.
Bready Ulster-Scots hosted its annual Sollus Burns Celebration and Supper/The Tartan Ball at The White Horse Hotel, Campsie, last month.
The evening in honour of Scotland’s national poet, Robert 'Rabbie' Burns, featured entertainment, a Burns supper and Scottish ceilidh.
As well as marking the group's milestone 25th anniversary, the event also featured a poignant tribute to Mr McFarland, with a special trophy dedicated in his memory.
It was awarded to young dancer, Olivia Brown.
A spokesperson for group said: "This year, as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, we did something very special.
"At Burns Night, we were proud to present - for the very first time - the Kenny McFarland Memorial Trophy.
"This award recognises the dancer who best embodies the true spirit of Highland Dance.
"When choosing the recipient, we looked for someone who is dedicated, hardworking and consistently positive - qualities that were central to our decision.
"We are absolutely delighted to announce that our first ever winner is Olivia Brown.
"Congratulations Olivia - a truly deserving recipient!"
