Club to host annual Cricky Hamilton Memorial Cup

STRABANE Rugby Football Club (RFC) is gearing up to host its annual Cricky Hamilton Memorial Cup on New Year’s Day.

The tournament is held in memory of local man and former player, Christopher (Christy) Hamilton.

The father-of-four passed away suddenly at home surrounded by his loving family in September 2023 after he suffered a heart attack.

Well-known and highly-respected throughout the locality, he was a former player and captain at the nortth Tyrone club where he was affectionately known as 'Cricky'.

News of his sudden death elicited much sadness across the district with tributes paid to "an absolute gentleman with a heart of gold".

The tournament has been held in his memory annually since his death, with the 2026 event marking the third year.

The 'Married' versus 'Singles' match in his memory kicks-off at Bradley Way at 2pm on Thursday, January 1, with all funds raised going in aid of Strabane RFC and its ongoing fundraising campaign which has been initiated to help it safeguard its future and finance much-needed new facilities at the former Strabane Academy site on Liskey Road.

A club spokesperson said: "As we prepare for match day in memory of Cricky, as always it’s a team effort and we are so grateful to everyone who helps make the day a success.

"The aim of the day is to help Strabane Rugby Club secure grounds to call home, support local businesses, enjoy time together, while remembering a very special person to all of us, and of course see who takes home the Cricky Hamilton Memorial Cup."

The match will be followed by an evening of music, fundraising and craic at Strabane Cricket Club from 6pm.

Music will be provided by Justin McGurk and The Boogie Men.
