MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Ruairí McHugh, has hosted the first Mayoral Tea Dance of his term.
The Castlederg man hosted an afternoon of music, dance and refreshments at the Guildhall with citizens from across the district attending.
The event brought a touch of nostalgia and charm, with everyone taking part in classic steps and sharing laughter and stories over tea and some sweet treats.
Speaking after the event, Mayor McHugh said: "I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who came along to our first Tea Dance of my Mayoral year.
"It was truly a joy to see the Guildhall filled with music, laughter and such a strong sense of community.
"These Tea Dances are about so much more than just dancing - they are an important opportunity for us to come together, to socialise, and to support one another.
"For many of our older residents, events like this help to combat loneliness and foster new friendships, and I’m proud that we could provide that space.
"I’m also incredibly grateful that your presence helped raise awareness and support for my two chosen charities this year: PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity and The Castlederg Patient Comfort & Terminally Ill Fund.
"Both organisations do outstanding work, and it means a great deal to be able to support them through events like this."
The Mayor added: "Special thank you to Hugh P and Maria Doherty for the fantastic music and The Sandwich Company for the lovely sweet treats and tea.
"Thank you once again for making it such a special occasion - I look forward to welcoming you to the next one!"
The Mayor will host various other dances throughout the year across the district.
The Guildhall will host three other dances on Wednesday, December 10, Wednesday, March 11 and Wednesday, May 13.
In addition to the events at the Guildhall, there will be special ticket-only tea dances held at other locations throughout the district to ensure wider participation.
St Pat’s Hall, Strabane, will be the host venue on Tuesday, December 16. Tickets will be available from November 25.
St Davog's GAC, Aghyaran, will also host a dance on Wednesday, April 8, with tickets available from March 8.
All events take place between 2pm and 4pm. They are free to attend but they are ticketed and attendees are encouraged to donate to the Mayor’s charities at each event.
