THE Heritage Education Centre at The Stables, Sion Mills, will be open to welcome visitors this weekend in celebration of European Open Heritage Days (EOHD).

The centre will be open from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, September 13 and from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday.

Light refreshments will be served in the Heritage Education Centre and, of course, the Mill Restaurant will be available on both days for those who wish to stay for a meal.

A central attraction at The Stables is the Heritage Museum which uses a variety of media - documents, photographs, artifacts and video - to tell the fascinating story of the Herdman family and the development of Sion Mills right from the foundation of the Flax Spinning Mill on the banks of the river Mourne in 1835.

Visitors to the Stables will have the opportunity to join the Heritage Trail through the village on Saturday at 11am and 2pm and on Sunday at 2pm.

The Heritage Trail starts from the Stables car park and takes in visits to all the iconic buildings along the main thoroughfare of Sion Mills.

A spokesperson for Sion Mills Building Preservation Trust (SMBPT) said: "In a village of over 40 listed buildings there are plenty to admire, appreciate and learn about!"
