Raphoe .... 4
KV .......... 2
SATURDAY saw KV 1st XI (formerly Knock and Victorians) travel to the Royal and Prior for an exciting match against Raphoe 1st XI ladies.
Both teams headed into the game undefeated from their previous league matches with Raphoe Ladies being unbeaten in their past five games across all competitions and KV winning their opening two league games in Senior 1.
In the opening 20 minutes of the game both teams found it difficult to retain possession forcing the ball to their opponents. On several occasions, KV took their opportunity to counter-attack down the left hand-side of the pitch, with their number five proving to be a key player in linking the ball with their mid-field and forward line.
Raphoe’s defence stood strong, however, with Victoria Wray, Sabrina Barnett and Janice Nelson making important tackles to prohibit KV from entering the D. Raphoe struggled to find their rhythm with many passes failing to reach white shirts.
Both teams started to gain momentum, with an eagerness and desire to score first. Both sides won several short corners but Raphoe suffered a blow when Lyndsey Tinney took a direct shot from the top of the D and Sabrina Barnett ran to the back post for the deflection.
The deflection came off a KV stick and the ball collided with Barnett. Time was stopped as Raphoe’s captain sustained a head injury. Barnett had to be substituted off and Raphoe had to play the remainder of the game without one of their key players.
As time began again for the remainder of the first half, Raphoe started to drive forward with nice linking play from Lisa Patterson and Lyndsey Tinney, who found Wendy Patterson in the D. Wendy kept her composure and planted the ball in the back of the opposition net with a reverse shot to make it 1-0 to Raphoe.
Both sides won several short corners but KV were denied the equaliser when Heather Humphrey was called into action to make a fine save.
KV were hungry for the equaliser just before half-time and with continued persistence their goal came from a shot at the top of Raphoe’s D which was hammered into the bottom left-corner. The score line was level at half-time.
In the second half, both teams were on the hunt for the win. In the initial five minutes, Raphoe soaked up a bit of pressure but quickly gained composure. KV couldn’t handle the pace of the ball and Zara Tinney, who had the ball in the D, made an excellent turn and fired the ball into KV’s net, to make the score line 2-1 to Raphoe.
Raphoe were now back to their winning ways and had settled into the game comfortably. Raphoe worked the ball beautifully from their back line to their forward line. Victoria Wray passed the ball to right back, Arlyne Kilpatrick, who made a fine pass to Leanne Patterson on the right wing.
Patterson, showing great skill, took on KV’s defence and found Wendy Patterson in the D. Wendy, from close range, slotted in her second goal of the game, making the score line 3-1.
KV tried to react but it was Raphoe’s high press and interception of the ball that led to their fourth goal of the match. Emma Harpur won a free just outside the D. Harpur quickly reacted and took the free. She drove around the D and with excellent precision, slap-hitted the ball into the bottom left corner, leaving the goal keeper with no chance.
In the last minute, Raphoe conceded a short corner. The final whistle blew and all KV players gathered around Raphoe’s D to salvage a goal back. A direct shot came from the top of the D, but the goal was denied when a Raphoe defender tried to hit the ball out of play.
KV hurriedly reacted for the rebound shot and slotted it into the right hand side of the goal, to finish the game with a 4-2 scoreline. Despite conceding a second goal, Raphoe came away with an impressive victory on home ground, to continue their unbeaten form.
