HUNDREDS of local people are again expected to take part in the Darkness into Light (DIL) 5K walk to raise funds and awareness for Pieta House - supporting those affected by suicide and self harm – which has been planned for May.
This will be the fourth year that the poigant and hugely emotive event will take place in Strabane.
The pre-dawn event, created by Pieta House, began back in Phoenix Park, Dublin in 2009 and has grown to become a global initiative with record-breaking numbers taking part in locations thoughout the world this year. It is held annually to raise funds and awareness of suicide and self-harm.
Last year, over 600 people took to the streets of Strabane to take part in the initiative which sees participants meet before dawn and walk to meet the sunrise and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better.
Details of the walk have just been released by the Strabane DIL committee who have also revealed some slight changes for this year, namely that there will be no registration on the morning of the walk.
They are encouraging people to sign-up now and those looking to avail of ‘Early Bird’ discount rates, are urged to do register as soon as possible before the deadline of Sunday, March 31.
Debbie Deans, one of the organisers, explained: “The committee of Strabane Darkness Into Light wish to advise that this years 5K walk will take place on Saturday, May 11.
“Due to the increasing popularity of this event they are urging people who wish to participate this year to register online before Sunday, March 31, to avail of the discounted Early Bird rates.
“Registration numbers are extremely high and this years event promises to be even bigger than before. Unlike previous years there will be no registration the morning of the walk.”
The organisers have emphasised that partcipiants are welcome not only from Strabane but acriss the entire district.
