LIFFORD Strabane AC members enjoyed a great day of action at the Irish Life Health National Cross-Country Championships in Abbottstown.

Athletes from every part of the country contributed to top class running competing for their club and county.

The women’s race was stacked with athletes of the highest quality throughout the whole field of 78 athletes.

The course itself was trying and very muddy in places with all competitors giving huge efforts, leaving all energy on the course.

Lifford Strabane AC’s unwavering Claire McGuigan coached by senior club coach Michael McKinney had yet again another superb run as her fantastic racing form continues leading the Donegal Ladies Team over the 8K distance to a Bronze Team National Medal as she cruised home in eighth place overall for another national medal.

In the U14 Girls race Lifford Strabane AC’s Elsa Moore was among the 161 athletes.

This young athlete had a strong run placing 49th overall over the 3K distance.

“Well done to both Claire, Elsa and their club coaches from all at Lifford Strabane AC,” said a club spokesperson.

“Congratulations Claire on your National Medal. All at the club are tremendously proud of you and your achievements.”

Earlier in the week the club had some midweek racing action from two senior athletes at the Winter Woolie Warmer Dyslexia 5K in Letterkenny.

This race had a total of 174 runners/walkers finishers.

Running a 20 second personal best time of 17:17 was Lifford Strabane AC’s Gavin McCullagh, placing a very impressive second place overall.

Track Masters athlete Seamus McAteer is enjoying the longer distance races of late finished in a fine time of 20:59.

All senior athletes are coached by Michael McKinney.

“Well done to all who competed and represented Lifford Strabane AC over the course of the week,” said a club spokesperson.

Couch to 5K Programme commences Tuesday, January 7. Training will be on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings lasting for five weeks.

Save the dates! Lifford Strabane AC 2020 5k Spring Series dates have been confirmed: January 13 at 10am at Carrigans; January 26 at 10.15am at Raphoe, with the final race on February 9 at 10.30am at Lifford.

“Our race series is an early start in the racing season. It’s a great opportunity for all athletes to set down goals for the incoming years races and to evaluate were they are in terms of racing.

It costs €8 per race or €20 when pre-registering for all three races. Technical top will be given to those pre-registered for the race series.

For the younger athletes aged five yrs old from September 1 to U12’s (that is anyone turning 11 in 2020) training will be on Monday’s only from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

For juvenile athletes aged U13+ training will be on both Monday and Wednesday’s from 6.30pm to 8pm

All athletes should be on the track and ready to train at 6.30pm sharp.

Adult training takes place on a Tuesday and Thursday at 6.45pm

All sessions are coach led. Lifford Strabane AC caters for all abilities.
