Good Relations Week to celebrate cultural diversity

THIS week there will be the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work being done by local organisations to promote good relations within our local communities, during Good Relations Week.

The week long programme shines a spotlight on the good work that is ongoing across the city and district in the field of community relations and raising cultural awareness.

Speaking ahead of Good Relations Week, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, John Boyle, said: “I’m really looking forward to celebrating some of the great work which is helping to build positive relations between cultures and communities, promoting diversity and challenging sectarianism and racism.

“I want to encourage everyone to go along to the various events and take the opportunity to find out more about the many rich and diverse cultures which make up our community.”

Good Relations officer with council, Pauline O’Neill, said: “Good Relations Week is all about inspiring new ideas, promoting understanding, respect and engagement between and amongst all sections of our community.

“There will be a number of special events taking place over the course of the week and I would love to see people turning out to support their local community groups. It really is a week to be enjoyed by all!”

The theme for this year’s programme is ‘Then, Now… Next?’ which focuses on 20 years after the Good Friday Agreement, how far we have come and what we should do next.

Over 30 events are taking place throughout the council area, including workshops, training events, launches, music events, showcases of work, public events and private events.

One of those events, organised by Melmount Community Forum, is taking place this evening (Wednesday) in the Fir Trees Hotel at 7pm.

The Executive Office, the Department for Communities, the Department of Justice and other Government Agencies are supporting the week, and events are being organised by a wide range of bodies, including the council, libraries, museums, community and voluntary groups, and youth organisations.
