Third place finish for Mid Tyrone bowlers at World Championships. thumbnail Gary McNabb and Gerard Conroy from Fintona Pearses took third place in the pairs competition at the World Short Mat Bowls Championships in Sweden.

FIVE representatives from Mid Tyrone travelled to Sweden to represent Ireland in the recent World Short Mat Bowls Championships and were part of a squad of 20 bowlers.

William Boggs from Ardstraw was in the singles competition and ended up fourth in his group with results not going his way on the first day of play.

Stuart McSorley also from Ardstraw was skipping in the triples competition along with Jordan Rankin and Mark Wilson from Limavady and Cookstown receptively.

Stuart's triple was in the top two or three throughout the competition but unfortunately ended up not in the top two and one win away from making the semi-finals.

Gary McNabb and Gerard Conroy from Fintona Pearses were together in the pairs competition at the World Championships in Sweden. The pair played well throughout the competition and got top in their group, with only one defeat.

Into the semi finals they played fellow Irish pair Sean and Kevin Conroy. The game was very tight with no pair running away with it but unluckily for the Fintona pair, Sean and Kevin pipped them in the last end of the game.

The Conroys were then beat in the final by a very good Swedish pair. Disappointed, Gary and Gerard moved on and played in the third and fourth game against the Welsh pair.

The game was tight the whole was through but Gary won it with the last bowl of the game to get third place in the world.

Ardstraw Ladies defeated in Irish Finals at Banbridge Heather Graham, Winnie Wilson and Jean McKee from Ardstraw qualified out of the Mid Tyrone Nationals in the ladies triples competition and got the opportunity to play at Belfast Indoor Bowls Club for the Irish title.

The ladies came through some very close games but got through to the main final which they played the ladies triple from Armagh.

With Heather not able to play, Evelyn Tait came in as a sub for the finals. The ladies played well but unfortunately the Armagh ladies triple were too strong on the day and took the title.
