McCullagh wins 5k race series. thumbnail Lifford/Strabane’s Garreth McCullagh, overall race series winner, is closely followed by Ben Carr of Finn Valley.

LIFFORD Strabane AC finally gor the last of their Dalys XL 3 Race 5k Spring Series races underway at Lifford on Sunday.

The large numbers of participants in the two prior races making the points table very interesting and for some it was all depending on this final race performance.

As a bitter cold wind blew, over 40 club members were among the 183 runners who took to the start line of this final race. The route took athletes on three loops of the town

The first three senior male athletes to the finish line for the club, all clocking fantastic times, were Garreth McCullagh, placing fourth overall in 16:48 and overall race series winner.

This athlete has had an incredible "run" of form, making great improvements on his racing times.

Garreth ran 17:54 which was a personal best for this athlete in the final of the Spring Series back in 2017, which shows a massive progression, taking over a minute off his 5k racing time to date.

The consistent Kenny Melaugh was second of the club's senior male athletes to the line placing sixth overall in 17:26.

In 12th place, second in the M40+ category and third senior male club finisher running a deserving personal best was Philip Kelly in 18:03, a personal best.

For the junior male athletes, it was the exceptional young Brandon McGrinder, who was the second Lifford Strabane AC finisher, placing fifth and overall winner of the juvenile category in an amazing time of 16:54.

This athlete too has made great improvements since showing commitment to his training. Back in the 2017 Spring Series Final Race this athlete had a finishing time of 17:33.

Charlie McElwaine eighth finisher overall in 17:48 was the second juvenile male club finisher. The ever improving Fionntan Moore was the third juvenile finisher for Lifford Strabane AC running a super time of 18:12 finishing 14th.

This week again it was the leading lady of Lifford Strabane AC, the commendable Claire McGuigan that rose to the occasion, running her third personal best in the race series and winning of the ladies' race in the astonishing time of 17:51.

This athlete displays a great commitment to her training which is very relevant in her race results.Veronika McGillian was the second of the club's senior ladies to the finish line in a super time of 21:48, with Linda McGrath running 22:43 and coming in third senior lady finisher for Lifford Strabane AC.

The three junior female club athletes to the finish line for Lifford Strabane AC, displaying some gutsy performances were Ellie McCurdy in 26:42, Alisha Cuskelly 27:20 and Faustina Gibson 27:35.

A club spokesperson said: "We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our club members in their excellent racing results, well done to all who improved their times with season bests and personal bests so early in the racing season and to say a massive thank you and offer our appreciation to them who provided food for the after race refreshments throughout the race series, to those that took on the various roles of marshalling, chip removal, tea making, registration duties, Pat Carlin for First Aid, Naomh Pádraig GAA for providing parking facilities, Clement Clarke for entertaining the runners during the tea, we also had singing and dancing from one of our very loyal race supporters Gloria Dona ghey.

"Thanks Gloria for your continued support at our races. Brendan and his team of time keepers for running a very successful race series and Liam Daly for his unwavering support of the annual race series proprietor of Daly's XL sponsor of the 3 Race 5k Spring Series.
