SUNDAY was a very active and successful day for Lifford Strabane AC athletes as the second race in the 5K Spring Series took place in Strabane, which is proving to be a very popular course since adding it to the race series in 2017.

The morning itself saw the rain ease off, bringing mild temperatures with it and despite a stiff breeze in parts, it didn't hamper the excellent racing times overall.


Over 50 athletes from Lifford Strabane AC were amidst the 231 race entrants that toed the line.

Lifford Strabane AC athlete Garreth McCullagh, whose fantastic racing form persists, once again found himself amongst the leading pack finishing fourth overall.

Garreth was pushed all the way to the finishing line, running a much-deserved personal best in the incredible time of 16:43.

Second senior male athlete finisher was Conor Gallagher in 17:03 placing ninth overall. Third senior male club finisher was the consistent Kenny Melaugh, 11th finisher overall in a great time of 17:17.

First Male Juvenile overall was Brandon McGrinder in a super-fast time of 17:13.

Brandon finished 10th and third Lifford Strabane AC finisher overall. Fionntan Moore making a return to the racing scene was the club's second male juvenile finisher in an impressive time of 18:38, with Michael McCurdy Jr finishing third for the club in a great time of 21:21.

Lifford Strabane AC's leading club lady Claire McGuigan, winner of the ladies' race, had a remarkable run, not content with running a personal best in the first race of the series this highly regarded athlete ran another personal best taking 14 seconds off her previous 5k time to finish in the astonishing time of 17:53.

Jessica Moorehead was second senior lady finisher for the club running a season best in a superb time of 20:23.


The unwavering Veronika McGillian was the third senior lady club finisher in a terrific time of 21:28!


Alisha Cuskelly was the first of the club's female juvenile athletes to the finish line in a super time of 27:39, followed closely behind by Lifford Strabane AC's female juvenile athlete Faustina Gibson finishing in a great time of 27:56.

A Lifford Strabane AC spokesperson said: "A massive well done to all who raced and congratulations to all those who ran personal bests.


Special thanks to our club members and their families that took on the various roles of stewarding, registration duties and providing the array of food.

"To Strabane Sigersons GAC for their hospitality and use of their premises, Liam Sweeney for his assistance, the dependable Pat Carlin for his services as First Aider and Liam Daly XL for providing sponsorship for the 3 Race Series and his continued support.

The final race of the series takes place in Lifford on Sunday, February 11, and races start at 10.30am. Registration takes place at Lifford Strabane AC club rooms.

Juvenile training Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.30pm. Walking Group Monday's and Wednesday's at 6.30pm. Adult training Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.45pm.
