TYRONE midfielder Colm Cavanagh has been honoured with selection on the 2017 All- Stars football team.

He was presented with his award at the annual banquet in Dublin.

Cavanagh was one of six Red Hand stars to be nominated, but Tiernan McCann, Peter Harte, Niall Sludden, Niall Morgan and Padraig Hampsey all missed out.

Cavanagh had another outstanding season, turning in a series of brilliant performances as Tyrone retained the Ulster Championship title and went on to the All-Ireland semi-final, where they lost to Dublin.

The PWC GAA/GPA All-Star Football team was announced live on the night, with Cavanagh the only Ulster player to gain recognition with selection on the team of the season.

All-Ireland champions Dublin dominate the selection with seven places on the final 15 - ahead of Mayo's six awards. Tyrone and Kerry collected one place each.

GAA president Aogán Ó Fearghail said: "My congratulations to all of the PWC GAA/GPA All-Stars for 2017 - the heroes who lit up yet another thrilling season in hurling and football, and who have now been given the honour of being called the best of the best.

"This is a special award that will stand the test of time and is due recognition of your excellence this season. Our thanks is due to all of our players who set such high standards through their commitment and dedication." Meanwhile, Tyrone hurling stars Brendan Begley of Carrickmore and Dungannon's Stephen Donnelly were selected on the Nickey Rackard Champion 15, in recognition of their outstanding displays for the Red Hand hurlers in the competition this year.

They were presented with their awards on Friday evening as part of the PwC GAA/GPA All-Stars banquet in Dublin's Convention Centre.

These awards recognise outstanding performances and contributions in each of the respective hurling championships which took place over the summer.

GAA president Aogan Ó Fearghail said: "I know only too well that the competition and commitment to excellence in the Ring, Rackard and Meagher Cups is every bit as intense as it is in the hunt for the Liam Mac- Carthy Cup. So, congratulations to all of those who have been selected winners in the PwC Champion 15s for 2017.

"These teams take great pride in striving for success in these competitions and it is fitting that we acknowledge and celebrate the players who were the stand our performers."
