CASTLEDERG teenager Sommer Lecky is among the shortlist for Athletics Northern Ireland's nominees for the 2018 Commonwealth Games team.

Lecky is fourth in the list of 15 athletes, nominated in priority order from those who have achieved the consideration standard and scored highly against the criteria to those who have come close of the standard.

Final selection of the Northern Ireland Track & Field team to compete at the games in Gold Coast, Australia will be made by the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council (NICGC) on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

Lecky, a pupil at Strabane Academy, was a gold medal winner at the Bahamas Commonwealth Youth Games in July. Her jump was the same as her Irish Indoor Championship gold medal winning jump from earlier in the year.

Jackie Newton, director of Coaching and Athlete Development, said: "This competition presents an excellent opportunity for our athletes to compete against some of the best in the world in a Northern Ireland vest.

"We are very pleased to present this list of highly talented athletes to the Commonwealth Games Council.

"All 15 have demonstrated their potential with strong performances during the qualification period. The list includes a great mix of experience along with new talent coming through and several athletes who have a high Commonwealth ranking with performances well above the consideration standard.

"We look forward to the final selections that will be announced in January."
