Cooke with recipe for great success at Strabane

Conal Cooke, playing off one handicap, again took the honours at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday past in the Medicare sponsored event.
He produced yet another superb under par round of 66 gross which transferred to a winning 40 points bringing Conal to a new scratch handicap. One over par after three holes, Cooke then added three birdies in a row to get his round in great shape. Only one more bogey was to follow, that at the par four 11th hole but further birdies at the 10th and 15th holes more than made up for any slips and he ran out the winner by a single point from a host of players on 39 points.
The very much back in form Vincent Bradley (17) who, fresh from his 'Pavarotti Tour' win, took the runners up spot - he has featured frequently on the scoreboard in recent weeks. Third place went to Ryan McGowan (5) with a solid two over par round, Adrian McDermott (18) took fourth again with 39 points. Stephen McCay (5) was the final nett prize winner with 38 points, while the gross went to Fred McGavigan (4) with an excellent one over par round. The over 60s prize winner was Francie Devine (11) with 38 points, Barry Callaghan (17) was the winner of the front nine with 22 points and Mark McCrea ( won the back nine with a similar score.
Topaz Stableford
Last Thursday's event was the rescheduled Topaz stableford and it went the way of Kevin Heffernan (18) with 40 pointts, just ahead on break of tie from Kieran McAleer (24). Vincent Bradley (18) was in third this time with 39 points while Fred McGavigan (4) took his first of two gross prizes this week this time with a two over par 34 points.
Monday Club
The Winter season Monday teams got underway on Monday past over just 13 holes. The winners were Denis Porter, Jimmy Wasson, Hugh Casey and George Turner with 67 points. The runners up were Kevin Keegan, Odhran McGettigan, Dermott Corry and Charlie Patton with 66 points.
Mixed Foursomes
The penultimate mixed foursomes of the season was played last Wednesday evening with 10 pairs participating. The winners were Margaret Wolfe and Gerry Casey with 22 points for the 10 holes in play and the runners up were Mary Duffy and Paul O'Hare with 21 points.
Claire's Hair Salon Open
The final Ladies open competition of the season was played last Tuesday, the winner with 37 points was Rosemary Wilson (28). Maeve Crowe (30) was the runner up with 36 points with Lorna Duffy (18) in third with 35 points. The gross winner was Jennifer Rouse ( on 25 points with the categories going to Norma Brogan (14) with 34 points in category one, Heather Mitchell (20) with 32 points in category two and Geraldine McCrory (32) with 35 points in category three. Caren Corry, with 20 points, won the first nine with Dympna Doherty, with 19 points, winning the second nine. The leading visitor was Patricia Devine from Newtownstewart Golf Club.
The Thursday club gets underway weather permitting this week over 15 holes. Please use the computer at the shop to enter and deposit entry fee and joining fee of 5 to the gents box.
This week's 50 bar credit draw winner was Jim Potts. The timesheet for the Captain's Outing is currently posted on the notice-board, the cost is 40 for the day. A further 62 players were eliminated this weekend from Last Man Standing leaving 151 still in contention for the prize of 1,000. All selections this week should be sent to your promoter by Friday at 6pm as there is a Friday night fixture.
