Martin wins President's Day at Strabane

Thursday, 24 August 2017

MARTIN Finlay led a field of over two hundred golfers home on Saturday at Strabane on the occasion of Mr Stewart McFeeters' President's Day.

Martin got to the turn with 19 pts on his card and played very steady over his closing holes despite a double bogey 5 at the 16th hole to accumulate a further 21pts and a winning total of 40pts.

It was good enough on the day from runner up KJ .Patterson (7). Ryan Mc Gowan (5) took third place with a tidy two over par round of 38pts, just getting the better of fourth placed Denis Porter (12) on a break of tie.

The final nett prize went to Nigel Houston (11) with 37 pts also on break of tie. Saturday's gross prize winner was Aidan Boyle (5) who is always a player for the big occasion, and his three over par total was good enough on the day giving him 33 gross pts.

Michael Doyle took the over 60's prize with 37 pts with the nines going to Michael Neeson (11) with 22pts for the outward nine and William Potts (24) also with 22 pts for the inward nine. President Stewart delivered an excellent speech thanking all those that had made his tenure to date a great honour and going on to wish all our teams left in domestic and All-Ireland finals the very best of luck in their endeavours to bring further honours to the club.

Thursday Singles Stableford

Stephen McCay (6) hit a great piece of late season form to take last Thursday's Stableford competition with an excellent 42pts.

It probably seemed like an average day getting to the turn with 18pts but an amazing run of birdies at the 10th,11th,12th,14th and16th holes set him up for a great win and a superb back nine of 24pts. Gerard Bradley (17) kept his great season going to take the runners up spot with 40pts with Adrian McLaughlin (12) in third place with 39pts.

Conal Cooke (1) was the gross winner with yet another under par round of 37 gross pts. Just a note on Thursday competitions, the Thursday club begins on Thursday, September 14, but will not run on Thursday, September 28, to facilitate the rescheduling of the Greg Mitchell Motors competition at the request of the sponsor.

Ladies Golf

Last week's Ladies event was The Eileen Keery Memorial stroke event. The winner was Heather Mitchell (21) with a total of 70 Nett, and the categories went to Jennifer Rouse(8) with 76 Nett in category one and to Mary Casey (32) with 73 Nett in category two.

Last week's mixed foursomes was won by lady captain Patricia Kelly playing with Dan Downey with 32 pts for the 13 holes in play. The runners-up were Geraldine and John Masterson with 29 pts. The sausage sizzle barbecue will take place on Wednesday August 29.

Team News

Pat Corry and his JB Carr team have qualified for the All-Ireland finals in Woodenbridge Co.Wicklow, beginning on September 2. The team travelled to their Ulster Final second leg at Dunmurray G.C. last Wednesday with a healthy 5-0 first leg advantage. The game however was still very close with the Belfast team winning the first three matches. However the later games rallied well with both the pairings of Liam Curry and Maurice McGettigan, and Francie Devine and Oliver McNally, winning their ties on the final green to take Strabane through.

Frankie Connolly and his Conway Cup team have a lot of work to do in their final with Aughnacloy G.C as they succumbed to a 11.5-4.5 defeat in the first leg final away from home last Sunday. The second leg will take place at Strabane at 1pm on Sunday, September 3.

'Last Man Standing' begins this weekend at the club, and all club members guests and friends are invited to participate in the hunt for the guaranteed 1,000 first prize. Entries should be with Brian Brolly for Friday night no later than 9pm. Last week's 50 bar credit winner was Paddy O'Kane.

The fantastic Gary Fitzpatrick is in this Saturday night at the club, a young man who is packing venues all over the country and is not to be missed. Admission is only 3.00, doors open at 9pm with support from 9.30pm-late bar.

There will be a series of recent presentations in the clubhouse this Friday night 24th August at 7.00pm sharp.
