Penalty shoot-out defeat for Athletic thumbnailStrabane Athletic lost out in the Busby McLaughlin Memorial Cup final on penalties.

STRABANE Athletic lost out on penalties in the final of Lifford Celtic's Busby McLaughlin Memorial Cup, with Letterkenny Rovers the eventual winners after a 2-2 draw in 90 mins.

Both teams took the lead during the game. Letterkenny's Conor Tourish scored in the 26th minute to send them into the break 1-0 up. Strabane made a few changes that had an immediate impact and Tom Carlin got an equaliser in the 49th minute. Tom got his second after 78 minutes to put Athletic 2-1 in front but Tourish scored Letterkenny's leveller with two minutes remaining to take it to penalties.

A spokesperson for Strabane Athletic said: " Congratulations to Letterkenny Rovers and a big thank you to Lifford Celtic for organising the competition. Thanks also to our management and players who came so close to landing the silverware and to all who came along to support the team during the competition."
