THERE was an abundance of activity this week again for Lifford Strabane Athletics Club athletes.

On a warm evening on Tuesday, June 13, the weather was perfect for spectators as almost 350 runners and walkers took to the start line of the extremely popular Convoy 5k Road Race. Lifford Strabane AC was well represented with 42 club athletes in total supporting the race, with many running personal bests on this course.

First of the senior male club athletes to the finish line was Paul Kelly in a smashing time of 17:02, finishing 19th overall in a high quality field. Newcomer to the club Kenny Melaugh had a great run to finish in a time of 17:38. Third senior male club finisher was club veteran Bill Duncan, winner of the M50+ category in a fantastic time of 17:46.

For the senior ladies club finishers it was once again the consistent Dympna Houston whom made it to the finish line in a superb time of 21:24. Second finisher, fresh from the Derry Marathon, was Veronika McGillian, another athlete who is in form this season and showing great potential, running a personal best in a great time of 22:07. Sharon Carlin had another great run, coming in third senior female club finisher. This athlete also ran a personal best in a fine time of 22:53.

Katelyn Stevenson was the winner of the junior female race and was solo club junior female athlete, finishing in a time of 25:54. Young Fintan Carlin was the first club junior male to finish in a super time of 21:00. Michael McCurdy was next to the finish line for the club in 21:34. Third was Ryan Henderson in 24:03.

 

Loughside Community 5K

On Thursday, June 15, four Lifford Strabane AC athletes, James Stevenson, Farah Stevenson, Angela McHugh and Caroline Dillion made their way to the hilly Loughside Community 5k, Letterkenny, with James placing second overall in a time of 18:18.

For Friday's Mantis to C.A.K.E. 5K, eleven club athletes toed the start line at Liscooley. First club finisher, finishing ninth overall, was Michael McGrinder, running a personal best in 17:44. Next to the finish line for the club fresh from a very strong run at Derry Marathon was the ever improving Linda McGrath. This athlete has shown great progression this season running a personal best in a superb time of 20:31, and was third lady 35+ overall. Veronika McGillian was fourth lady 35+ overall, running a personal best (the second in a week) in a great time of 21:11. Maddy McCurdy, another athlete in great running form, ran 22:38, another personal best within a week.

Niall Elliott finished as second finisher overall at the St. Eugene's GAA, Newtownstewart 5K, finishing in a time of 18:28.

 

Donegal Masters Championships

On Sunday at the Donegal Masters Championships held in Finn Valley, it was the turn of the club coaches Damien Crawford and Mark Doherty to show their talents. In the shot event, Damien Crawford took gold in the O45 11.36m and Mark Doherty in the O50 Shot event also took gold 10.60m. In the Javelin O45 event it was another gold for Damien Crawford with a throw of 48.52m and in the Javelin O50 event Mark Doherty threw 36.41m for gold.

The Lifford Strabane AC 5K race is on Wednesday, July 12, in Lifford.Training continues for juveniles on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30pm and adults on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45pm.
