Impressive medal haul for Lifford Strabane AC thumbnailAlan McGinley leading the U19 boys to win gold.

THE big news of the week was on at the Ulster & NI U18 and U20 and Senior Track and Field Championships at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast on Saturday, withLifford Strabane AC athletes excelling in their respective events.

In the Senior Women's High Jump, Shannon Craig, coached by John O'Donnell, jumped her way to a silver medal, and then a gold medal in the U19 Girls High Jump.

Javelin thrower Gareth Crawford, coached by his dad, Damien Crawford, made it on to the podium with a gold medal in the U19 Boys Javelin, and a silver medal in the Senior Men's Javelin.

On the track, Alan McGinley was in top form, running outstanding times in a top class field. He led the U19 boys home to claim the gold medal in the 1500m, with Niall Elliot winning a bronze medal, and newcomer to the track and field events, Brandon McGrinder, finished fifth overall in the same event.

Both McGinley and Elliot were also successful in the U19 Boys' 800m, with Alan place first and Niall Elliott coming just behind in second. Brandon McGrinder was unfortunate in this event finishing just outside the medals zone in fourth. Alan then went on and place third in the Senior Men's 800m picking up a bronze medal.

In the U18 Boys' 1500m, club athlete Charlie McElwaine took the gold medal, and he also placed third in the U18 Boys' 800m to take the bronze medal in this event. All athletes are coached by Michael McKinney.

A total of five gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals were accomplished by this very talented group of Lifford Strabane AC athletes, a very successful day for the club.


Carrigans 5K

Wednesday, June 7, was the club's own 5K race in Carrigans, on what was a very mild and dry evening, with 33 Lifford Strabane AC athletes toeing the start line.

First senior male club finisher in a superb time of 20:33 was Sean Carlin. Sean has improved in every race distance this season to date. Next up was his younger brother Dominic Carlin, he too ran a great race to finish in 21:25. Third senior male club finisher was club coach Christopher Cuskelly, finishing in a time of 21:40.

Young Harvey Mullen took the first Junior Male category prize overall finishing in a fantastic time of 20:37. Second was Michael McCurdy Jr in a super time of 22:03 with his younger brother Mark McCurdy finished third Junior Male overall in a fine time of 23:38. The first three senior lady club finishers were all deservingly category prize winners. Ursula Coyle placed first in the F50+ category in a great time of 22:58. Sharon Carlin was next to the line for Lifford Strabane AC to finish in a time 23:11 placing second in F40+ category, with Rhonda Green third senior female club finisher, running a personal best in a fine time of 24:07.

The Junior Female race was won by club athlete Clara Mullen. Clara finished in a time of 24:26 to take first in the Junior Female category. Hot on her heels was Farah Stevenson who finished second Junior Female overall in a time of 24:29, just three seconds behind the winner. Sarah Gibson was third Junior Female finisher overall in 24:43.


Donoughmore NS 5K

On Friday, June 9, there was a huge show of support at the Donoughmore National School 5K in Liscooley, outside Castlefin. In excess of 300 runners and walkers took to the start line. Lifford Strabane AC were represented by 13 club athletes, four of which were category winners. First club senior male finisher was James Stevenson, third finisher overall in a fantastic time of 18:02. Aidan McGrath was second club senior male finisher in 24:05, and third was Laurence Doherty in 30:15.

The ever consistent Dympna Houston placed second Senior Lady finisher overall in a superb time of 21:38. After that was Rhonda Green in 24:43 with Lisa Kerlin finishing third for the club in 28:33. In the junior female race it was all about the Stevenson sisters. Farah finished in a time of 25:18 to place second junior female overall, Katelyn placed thirrd junior female overall in 25:55 whilst their younger sister Jaime Rose was the third club junior female finisher in 46:20. Club athlete Ryan Henderson was the solo junior male representative on the night, and finished in a time of 25:10.


Saturday events

On Saturday Lifford Strabane AC was represented at 2 different events. The extremely popular Enniskillen 10K saw 800 plus runners take to the start line, three of which were Lifford Strabane AC members. Hugo Doherty finished in a super time of 43:20, Paddy Tourish 45:45 and Liam Daly 53:34.

At the Aerfort Dhun na nGall Runway 2017 5K, among the 90 runners and walkers was eight club athletes, five of which picked up category prizes. First club athlete to the finish line was Harvey Mullen, who won the Junior Male race to finish in a time of 22:41, placing 14th overall. Diarmuid O'Donnell was the second Junior Male finisher in a time of 25:01. Thomas Mullen Sr finished in 25:01.

Winner of the Junior Females race was Clara Mullen 27:11, while Mary Mullen finished in 27:55. Aoibheann O'Donnell took second in the Junior Female race in a time of 34:16, and Brendan O'Donnell finished with a time of 34:35, with young Cormac O'Donnell placing third in the Junior Male Category in 35:32.

Training continues for juveniles on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30pm, and adults on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45pm.
