Local athletes win gold at Irish Schools' Championships thumbnailCousins, Conor Breslin, Deele College, Raphoe, and James Kelly, Royal and Prior, Raphoe, both won gold medals in the Irish Schools' Championships in Tullamore. Conor won the senior boys' hammer event, while James won the boys' senior shot putt.

STRABANE Academy pupil Sommer Lecky was back in record breaking form again at the Irish Schools' Championships in Tullamore on Saturday.

The Castlederg teenager broke the long-standing senior girls' high jump record with 1.81m, eclipsing the 1985 mark by Ursula Fay. Lecky also won silver in the senior girls' long jump, leaping a distance of 5.62m. There was more local gold medal success with Holy Cross College Strabane's Gareth Crawford clinching gold in the senior boys' javelin, with his throw of 58.53m well ahead of James Meier of St Andrew's College in second place.

Royal and Prior Raphoe's James Kelly topped the podium in the boys' senior shot putt with a 15.29m throw, while his cousin, Conor Breslin, representing Deele College Raphoe, just edged out Travis Coomey of Bandon Grammar School by five centimetres to win the senior boys' hammer.

Royal and Prior's Shannon Craig just missed out on a bronze medal in the girls senior high jump, leaping 1.60m.

Deele College's Aine Kerr finished sixth in the girls' intermediate long jump, while Royal and Prior's Cate Smyth was a runner-up in the junior girls' long jump, recording a distance of 5.13m. In the girls' junior hammer, Aine-Marie McBride earned a top five finish for Deele College.

Strabane Academy's Sarah Crawford threw a 28.19m in the girls' junior javelin to finish eighth place.

In the junior boys' events, Ross Henderson finished fifth for Royal and Prior in the hammer.
