Local athletes put in impressive performances

LAST Tuesday saw 27 Lifford Strabane AC athletes take to the start line of the Drumoghill 5K.

This race was supported by 135 runners/walkers in total.The first senior male club athlete to the finish line were Paul Dillion, who placed second overall and winner of the M40+ category in a fantastic time of 17:54. Next was Hugo Doherty in a super time of 20:18, and third senior club finisher in a great time of 20:36 was Paddy Tourish.

In the Junior Males race, juvenile athlete Aaron McGrath was the winner in a superb time of 18:38, placing third overall. Thomas Mullen Jr was second junior male finisher, placing fourth overall in a super time of 19:06, with the young Harvey Mullen placing tenth overall and third junior male in a great time of 20:18.

Senior female athlete Dympna Houston displayed her potential again by winning the ladies race in a fine time of 21:22. Mary Mullen was the next senior female club athlete to the finish line in a time of 25:58 and Caroline Dillion was third to finish for the club in 28:38. In the junior females race, Alisha Cuskelly had a great run to take first in this category in a time of 25:36, and Ellie McCurdy placed second in a time of 27:21.

Buncrana 5K

On Wednesday 24 in Buncrana at the Furey Insurance 5K, which always proves to be a popular race, 163 athletes took to the starting line on an ideal evening for racing. Lifford Strabane AC was represented by two senior male athletes at this race. Both runners Bill Duncan and David McNulty each having a fantastic run with Bill placing second in the M50+ category in a terrific time of 17:30. David running a superb personal best in a time of 18:57.

Track and Field Open Meet

Action was on the track at the club's track and field open Meet on Thursday 25. Lifford Strabane AC middle distance athletes performed extremely well. In the 800m 'A' race, Alan McGinley ran a personal best in a time of 1:56:46 placing second. Niall Elliott placed fourth, he too running a personal best in a time of 1:59:49. Charlie McElwaine in the same race placed eighth overall running a personal best in a time of 2:02:94. In the 800m 'B' race, Patrick Gibson placed 5th in a time of 3:06:61. In the 1500m race Charlie McElwaine placed second overall in a time of 4:24, with just two seconds dividing him and Brandon McGrinder taking third in 4:26 in what was this athletes first time to take part in this type of event, and most definitely will not be his last.

Edinburgh Marathon

Scotland was the location for senior male athlete, Liam Cleary, who travelled to Edinburgh to be among the 6000-plus runners taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon. Despite the very warm weather conditions, Liam ran a personal best to finish in a great time of 3:39. Closer to home at the AAI games in Santry Dublin, Alan McGinley and Niall Elliott were in action again both running in the Senior Mens 800m race. Alan placed third to take bronze in a time of 1:57:80, with Niall finishing in fourth position in a time of 2:00:86.

Elswhere, club athletes Thomas Mullen Jr, Sarah Crawford and Gareth Crawford successfully represented their school at the Ulster Schools Track and Field. Thomas took first in the 400m hurdles, Sarah second in javelin and Gareth first in javelin. These athletes will now go on to represent their school at the All Ireland Track and Field Championships in Tullamore, Co. Offaly in June.

A date for the diaries is the first of the club's 5k races, the Carrigans 5K on Wednesday, June 7. Race commencing at 7:30pm. A large contingent of club athletes will take to the start line of Derry Marathon this year again. Training continues for juveniles on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30pm, and adults on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45pm.
