Another successful week for Lifford Strabane athletes

IT was another busy and somewhat successful week of competing for Lifford Strabane AC athletes and their coaches.
On Sunday, April 30, club athlete, Pádraig Mag Loingsigh, ran the Hackney Half Marathon whilst he was there on holidays.
Mid-week racing at the Trentagh 5K on Wednesday past saw 140 runners and walkers take part. Lifford Strabane AC was represented by Philip Kelly. Kelly had an excellent race to finish third overall in a superb time of 18:29.
Some of the clubs juvenile athletes were in action in Finn Valley with Lifford Strabane AC athletes, Ellie McCurdy, Harriet McCrossan, Hannah Whyte and Oran Gallagher, among those that picked up well deserving medals on the night.
On Thursday, 17 club athletes were among the 200+ runners and walkers who took to the start line of the Moyle National School 5K. Some fantastic times were recorded on a very difficult hilly trying course with the first half of the course all uphill before levelling out with a downhill for the final "K".
Lifford Strabane AC senior male athlete Paul Dillion ran 18:42 to finish second overall and first home for the club. Dominic Carlin was the second male senior club finisher in a time of 22:43 and third was John Craig (25:04).
In the junior girls race the winner was Lifford Strabane AC's own Elsa Moore. At the tender age of 10 years old, Elsa ran an unreal time of 20:48 to finish fourth overall. Ellie Green was second junior girl club finisher (25:02) and third was Alisha Cuskelly (28:02).
For the junior males, Jude McCrossan was first home for the club in a super time of 22:03, followed closely behind by club mate, Jack Moore, with a great time of 22:07.
Rhonda Green was first club senior lady to the finish line in a time of 26:09, running minute and 30 seconds faster than her previous run on the same course last year. Second was Lisa Kerlin (29:05) and third was Judy Duddy (31:53).
On Friday, May 8, a total of 123 runners toed the start line of the Ballyshannon 5K, hosted by Tir ConaillAC. Lifford Strabane AC athlete, Conor Gallagher, finished 11th overall, fifth senior male in a time of 16:34. Junior male athlete, Brandon McGrinder, finished 17th overall placing second juvenile male finisher overall in a super time of 17:16. Michael McGrinder had a great run to finish in 18:11, Jay Walsh (23:03) and Stephen Kerlin (25:07).
Saturday, May 6, brought exciting news all the way from Cork. At the Leevale Track & Field Meet, young Brendan O'Donnell, coached by his father John, threw his way to a European Standard in the Men's Hammer with a huge personal best performance of 67.20M to win the Junior Men's event overall. A massive congratulations to both Brendan and John whose commitment and dedication to their sport is reflected in the results.
Closer to home at Mary Peter's Track in Belfast, Lifford Strabane AC athlete Shannon Craig jumped 1.60M to take second place in the Women's High Jump.
Meanwhile, Alan McGinley made the trip to Wicklow to compete in the 800M 'A' Race at the IMC Meet in Greystones. From the onset the pace was extremely fast. McGinley, coached by Michael McKinney, ran an impressive one minute and 57.79 seconds for the 800M distance.
On the roads senior club athlete Oliver Barrett took on the challenging Killian Doherty Memorial Half Marathon, Drumquin. Oliver placed sixth overall in a fine time of 1.40:14.
At the Donegal Juvenile's Day 1 of the Track & Field Competition at Templemore on Sunday, a number of Lifford Strabane AC juvenile athletes took part. 19 medals in total were won by these very talented bunch of athletes - six Gold, six Silver and seven Bronze.
The next highly anticipated target race for some of the senior athletes is the popular Strabane Lifford Half Marathon and 5K Run which takes on Sunday.
Can all members ensure that their membership is paid up to date.
Training continues for juveniles on Monday and Wednesdays at 6.30pm, adult training on Tuesday and Thursdays at 6.45pm. Lifford Strabane AC caters for all abilities.
