Fifth place finish for Dergview

Thursday, 27 April 2017

DERGVIEW'S fifth place league finish was confirmed after their 4-1 defeat to champions Warrenpoint Town.

While it has been a promising campaign from Richard Clarke's side this season, it was another case of defensive errors undoing an otherwise good Derg performance

Warrenpoint made the early running on Saturday but it was Dergview who thought they had taken the lead, only for a Ryan Campbell goal to be controversially cancelled out for offside. Moments later a poor clearance by Derg keeper Stefan McCusker fell perfectly to John McGuigan who slid the ball home.

Dergview responded with Nathan Cashel heading straight at the home keeper when perhaps he should have done better as the visitors continued to give as good as they got either side of the interval.

Just before the hour mark Dergview were back in business when Richard Lecky laid the ball off to Campbell, who got a fortunate ricochet to curl it expertly inside the goalkeeper's bottom left hand corner.

But no sooner had the score been levelled, another defensive error gifted Croskery an easy finish for Point to go ahead a second time.

The visitors though were far from done and moments later Cashel beat three players before ushering in Campbell, whose rasping shot cannoned back off a post.

Having survived, the champions wrapped up the win with two late goals.

Josh Lynch waltzed through to make it 3-1 with a fine individual effort before Anto Reilly rounded off the scoring in injury-time.

Afterwards, Town were presented the league trophy as Matthew Tipton's team secured an instant return to the Danske Bank Premiership.

Next weekend Dergview round off their season with an away game at the PSNI.
