Two silvers for Mark at Indoor Masters

AMONG the 336 finishers at the SSE Airtricity Derry 10 Mile Road Race on Saturday were three Lifford Strabane AC athletes.
Club coach, Barry McArdle, was the first club finisher in a superb time of 78 minutes, followed by Paul Griffin racing this distance in a great time 82:24. Maddy McCurdy was the final club finisher and solo female club member, running a personal best in a great time of 90:08.
On Sunday, it was all action at the Irish Life Health Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone International Arena. Lifford Strabane AC track and field master athletes, Mark Doherty and Seamus McAteer, made the trip down on the hunt for medals. This event saw a very successful return to competition for club athlete Mark Doherty after knee surgery. Both athletes performed extremely well which saw Doherty returning home with two silver medals.
In the shot putt for Men 50 category, Mark placed second with a 10.26m throw and in the weight for distance (Men 50, 56lbs), he threw 6.62m, coming in second again. Seamus McAteer competed in three events placing sixth overall in the Men 40 400m race in a time of 62.57secs, fifth in the Men 40 shot putt with a throw of 7.50m and in the weight for distance (Men 40, 56lbs), for 5.00m to place fourth overall just missing out on a bronze.
On the road at Ellen's 10k in Glenelly Valley, a few members of Lifford Strabane AC joined forces with the Glenelly branch of Lifford Strabane AC to show their support at this event resulting in father and son duo, Michael McGrinder and juvenile member Brandon McGrinder, finishing joint winners in a fantastic time of 35 minutes.
Next up is the Cara Bundoran 10K/10Mile Road Race on Saturday, March 11, which is very popular and one of the goal races for our club members. Training continues for juveniles on Monday and Wednesdays at 6.30pm, and for adults on Tuesday and Thursdays at 6.45pm.The 'Couch-2-5k' programme continues at the club as they near their goal race, the St Patrick's Day 5K.
