5K Spring Series comes to a close in Lifford thumbnailCharlie McElwaine of Lifford Strabane AC leads the runners into the 5K on Sunday morning.

SUNDAY was 'D-Day' for Lifford Strabane Athletics Club as the club brought its annual 5K Spring Series to a close with the third and final race at Lifford.

The large numbers of participants in the two prior races made the points table very interesting and for some it was all depending on this final race performance. As a bitterly cold wind blew on the morning of the race, 70-plus Lifford Strabane members were among the 271 runners who took to the start line of the final race.

The race would take the athletes around three loops of the town, finishing in 'The Diamond'.

The first three senior male athletes to the finish line for the club, all clocking fantastic times, were James Stevenson, fifth overall in 17:18, Garreth McCullagh, who was second with a personal best in 17:54, coming in 10th overall, and third was Paul Dillon, 13th overall in 18:00.

The first three junior male athletes home for the club with outstanding performances all around were Charlie McElwaine, fourth finisher overall in 17:16; Niall Elliott, sixth finisher overall in 17:31, and Brandon McGrinder keeping the very high racing standard up to finish in 17:33.

The first four senior female club athletes to cross the finish line, all running consistently throughout the race series with super finishing times were Leoni Mullen as the first lady finisher overall with a well deserving personal best in 19:37, Carmel Hoynes ran a personal best in 22:15, and two ladies recording the exact same finishing time of 22:47 were Claire Keys and Ursula Coyle.

The first three junior female club athletes to the finish line for Lifford Strabane AC, displaying some gutsy performances, were Katelyn Stevenson in 24:16, Clara Mullen with 24:31 and Sarah Gibson, who missed one of the races in the series due to illness, finishing in 24:39.
