Esteemed coach John Kavanagh opens new gym thumbnailMembers of SBG Strabane were clearly delighted to welcome coach John Kavanagh and Bellator's James Gallagher to their gym.

THE esteemed John Kavanagh, mentor to Conor McGregor and recently crowned Coach of the Year, joined Strabane's own James Gallagher to officially open SBG's new premises on Friday night past.

The local gym has relocated to their new premises on the Dublin Road Industrial Estate, Strabane,

Kavanagh first visited the local gym in September 2015 and have since welcomed several distinguished names and faces including a number of SBG coaches, black belt, Tom King, and ex-UFC fighter, Paddy 'The Hooligan' Holohan, who all demonstrating their BJJ and MMA skills to enthusiastic members and visitors to the club.

Friday night saw a large attendance, who enjoyed expert tuition, with Kavanagh displaying some of his favoured techniques, with the seminar running for over two hours to highly appreciative participants.

Kavanagh awarded promotions to SBG Strabane coach, Darren Friel, who was promoted to purple belt, coach, Garath Vaughan, was promoted to blue belt 4 stripe, with Barry Gallen and Eugene Kerlin promoted to blue belts. 

He surprised many after the seminar by revealing McGregor's UFC 155 Belt to great delight.

"SBG Strabane are very fortunate to have local SBG and Bellator fighter James Gallagher train with us when he is back in town. He's a real gentleman and always willing to demonstrate the techniques that have made him such a great fighter," a spokesperson said.

"We would like to thank John Kavanagh and James Gallagher for all their support over the last year and for the promotions tonight.

"As a small club we are making tremendous strides and it is testament to the hard work and dedication of coaches and members of SBG Strabane.

Training at SGB Strabane takes place on a Thursday and Friday between 8-10pm. "We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and inclusive environment and welcome anyone wishing to take up Martial Arts or self defence to come along and have a go.

"Keep an eye out for our children's classes which will be starting in the not to distant future."
