Strabane man heads to Oman for Military World Cup thumbnailStrabane native, Aidan Friel, who is playing at the Military World Cup football tournament in Oman this week.

STRABANE man, Aidan Friel, travelled to Oman last week as part of the Irish Military Forces football team who take part in the Military World Cup.

Aidan is based with the Aer Corps at Baldonnell and is a seasoned League of Ireland player thanks to spells at Athlone Town and Wexford Youths.

The cup competition started last Friday and continues until January 29 in the city of Muscat, capital of Oman, is an Arab country on the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

Participants in the tournament include 16 military national teams that qualified from the pre-qualifying stage, as well as to the host country and the champion of the previous version.

Three stadiums were assigned to the tournament, namely Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Police Stadium, and A'Seeb Stadium in addition to a number of sub playgrounds.

Sixteen teams are taking part in this, the second CISM Football World Cup, and are classified into four groups: Group A comprises Oman, Guinea, Bahrain, and France, while Group B includes Algeria, Germany, Iran, and North Korea. Group C features Ireland, Mali, Qatar, and USA, while Egypt, Poland, Canada and Syria are in Group D.

On the local scene Aidan recently made the move from Wexford Youths to Longford Town and should be a key part for Alan Matthews defence as they attempt to get back to the Premier at the first time of asking.

The Military World Cup is a prestige tournament. Aidan and the Ireland side opened against Mali yesterday, Tuesday, and play the USA tomorrow, Thursday and Qatar on Saturday 21.
