Lifford Strabane runners compete in Finn Valley and Greencastle races

FOR most of us, the Christmas and New Year period is renowned for over indulging and celebrating the festivities. Despite this, two popular Boxing Day races attracted Lifford Strabane AC athletes to their start lines. Four club members travelled to Finn Valley, Ballybofey to participate in the St Stephen's Day 5k, whilst 21 club members made the journey to Greencastle, Co. Tyrone for the annual five mile road race.

The St. Stephen's Day 5k saw 564 athletes take to the starting line. Lifford Strabane AC's first athlete to the finish line was the ever consistent Leoni Mullen, who is having a superb season to date, running a sub-20 for the first time. Leoni finished second senior lady, and third female finisher overall in a fantastic time of 19:38. =This is a personal best for this athlete, knocking a massive 47 seconds off her previous best 5k time.

Aaron McGrath, son of club member Linda McGrath, ran a super time of 20:41 finishing second junior male overall. Linda herself was next home for the club in a great time of 23:22. Kate Mullen made a comeback to running after being out of action for a number of months due to injury finished in a time of 30:55.

At the annual Greencastle 5 mile road race, which is in its 31st year, attracted well over a thousand participants in what was a great achievement for all involved.

The first three male finishers for the club were Garreth McCullagh, running a fantastic time of 30:45 recording a course PB, Michael McGrinder, second male finisher in a super time of 32:46, and Geoffrey Sproule was third for the club in a great time of 33:41.

Brandon McGrinder, solo club junior male representative had a great run to finish fourth junior male overall in a superb time of 31:56.

The first three female finishers for the club were Ita Kelly running a terrific time of 36:36, Ita was also first in F45+ Category, Ursula Coyle was second female club finisher in a great time 42:40, third was BridgidMcCloskey 47:35. Bridgid runs with the Glenelly Branch of Lifford Strabane AC and is coached by Lorraine McGrinder.

Other club members and finishing times were; Michael Duncan 33:42, Raymond Hoynes 34:14, Oliver Barrett 35:05, Gerard Campbell 35:28, Dominic Carlin 38:13, Sean Carlin 38:20, Joe McNulty 38:56, Liam Maguire 39:01, Paul McNamee 39:12, Bridgid McBride 50:30, John Coyle 54:06, Teresa Kirk 54:38, Margaret McGarvey 56:56, Karen Carlin 58:51, Rosemary Boggs 59:16.

A few races coming up for anyone that's interested: Loughmacrory 5 Mile Race, December 31, at 12noon , End of Year 5k Run/3k Walk hosted by Aghyaran GAA club, December 31 at 11:15am. January 1, Raphoe's Family Fun 5k Run & Walk hosted by Raphoe Road Runners at 12:30pm.
