STRABANE Athletic made the long journey to Comber with a depleted squad, to play in the third round of this season's Northern Ireland Intermediate Cup.

Diversions on route meant that the team arrived just 15 minutes before kick off. The opening exchanges were fairly even and Strabane had a half chance when Mc Brearty's pass just eluded David Taylor.

However Athletic were facing an uphill struggle as early as the tenth minute when a good low cross was converted by Comber's Jordan Dougherty for the opening goal. Strabane had a great chance to equalise when Taylor got to the byline but no one was on hand to apply the finish to his low cross.

Athletic were very unfortunate shortly afterwards when Kyle Harte who had made a good contribution so far was injured and played no further part in the game.

It was a good contest at this point and David Taylor supplied Aaron Porter but the forward shot over the bar. At the other end it took a fine save by Ruairi McElroy and a goal line clearance from Gary Henderson to prevent Comber extending their lead.

However they did just that on the 23rd minute when a long throw wasn't cleared by the Athletic defence and the Comber winger rifled home. Strabane continued to create chances and Taylor, McBrearty and Crawford all had shots but the home keeper wasn't really troubled.

Athletic suffered a fatal blow on the stroke of half time when Dougherty was on hand to finish off a good passing move to make it 3-0 at the break.

The lead was four shortly after the restart when a mistake in the Strabane defence allowed the home forward a one on one with Strabane keeper McElroy and a good finish gave the keeper no chance.

It was a case of damage limitation for Strabane after that and to their credit the local team continued to work hard and press but they fell further behind when Jordan Dougherty completed his hat trick with a superb volley from the edge of the box.

Strabane got a consolation shortly afterwards with a great headed goal by Aaron Porter. The hosts managed one more before the final whistle to end Athletic's interest in this year's Intermediate Cup competition.
