Mixed emotions as Killen settle for draw

IT WAS mixed emotions for Gary Sproule and his Killen Rangers side as they earned 3-3 away draw with Enniskillen Santos on Saturday.

Rangers went in at half-time 2-0, but turned things around in the second period to lead 3-2 coming into the final few minutes, only to concede a late equaliser.

"At 2-0 down I didn't see a way back into the game for us, I thought Santos were going to kick on as they looked comfortable. Although we ended up going ahead, I don't think we deserved to beat them, it would have been tough on them.

The league point was Killen's first away from home, and a major positive Sproule takes from the game was how his side battled back after half-time. "It's good to get that monkey off our backs. It really was a game of two halves, and we battled well to respond."

Killen's major chance in the first half came through Adam Buchanan after 15 minutes, but he failed to open the scoring. then Santos truck through Cathal Beacom and Niall Cassidy.

Graham Young started the comeback for Rangers ten minutes into the second half with a fine goal from 2o yards, before Scott Sproule, operating at centre forward in place of the injured Timmy Crompton, equalised matters.

Crompton, hampered with a hamstring injury, then entered the match and scored a header with 11 minutes remaining. Santos would respond though with just three minutes left when Nicky Dunbar's shot found its way through a crowded box and into the net.

"In the first half we were not in the game at all. Then we brought Buchanan back into midfield to curtail Beacom and that worked. Graham's goal lifted us a bit.

"We beat Santos 5-1 at the start of the year, but they had a much stronger team out on Saturday. They were unrecognisable from the first day.

Killen now face the long trip on Saturday to play Ballymena LEague side Cullybackey Blues in the third round of the Junior Cup.
