STRABANE Rugby Club's two teams enjoyed a hugely successful Saturday as both progressed to the semi-finals of their respective cup competitions. The first team defeated Cavan 12-10 in the quarter-finals of the Gordon West Cup, while the seconds defeated Carrick fifths in the last eight of the McCambley Cup by 6-0.

A HEAVY hail shower at kick-off time passed over quickly and conditions were reasonable for Strabane Rugby Club firsts Gordon West Cup quarter-final against Cavan.
Strabane took the lead after eight minutes. Full-back, Dean McCarter, intercepted a loose pass in midfield and ran through for a fine try at the posts. The kick was missed.
The visitors struck back with a try, presented to them courtesy of a wild Strabane fly kick into an attacking centre's hands. The points were added.
Both teams missed kickable penalties and it was stalemate for most of the second half. With defeat looking likely, Strabane put on a grandstand finish with the pack making ground.
A Cavan player was sin-binned. With play on Cavan's line, flanker Chris Hamilton snapped up the loose ball and dived over for a try. The kick was missed, but Strabane were through.
Strabane will need to improve their play for the semi-final, as there were too many mistakes and handling errors.
