Stephen Browne inspires Beragh to cup progress over Glebe thumbnailA brief heavy snowstorm made playing football difficult during the Mulhern Cup first round tie.

Beragh Swifts 4 Glebe United 1

THERE was no shock in the only Mulhern Cup first round encounter on Saturday as first division Beragh United eased past second division side, Glebe United, by 4-1 at Fountain Lane.
Beragh have been on the inconsistent side of the form book this season, as they struggle to match their exploits of last term which saw them fighting for the title until late in the season, but they managed to rediscover their efficiency in front of goal against United.
Glebe United briefly looked to have started on the front foot when Brian Sweeney was denied by a superb Johnny Crawford save, but it was the Swifts who flew from then on, as the influential Stephen Browne twice went close and Jamie McKeown missed a good chance.
The home side opened the scoring when an unmarked McKeown headed home a Browne corner kick at the back post and Browne was the architect again minutes later when his pace provided the platform for David Fulton to smash a thunderous strike from the edge of the box past Chris Burke.
And Browne was in the thick of it again a short time later, latching onto a Robbie McGrew pass, before teeing up McKeown to convert at the back post.
The match burst into life in the second half, but for the wrong reasons, as Robbie McGrew was shown a red card for a late tackle on Aidan Lynch, who was also dismissed for his retaliation.
When the game settled after that, Beragh added to their tally when Michael Brown and Browne combined for the latter to engineer his fourth assist of the game, as Fulton slid the ball home.
The visitors grabbed their consolation goal shortly after the restart when Eamon McGrath converted from the spot, after Trevor Pattison had been penalised for a handball, following a Sweeney header.
