Spectacular return for Greenbank tournament
Thursday, 23 February 2012
THE Greenbank adult badminton tournament, which had been dormant for 26 years, made a spectacular return to Inishowen this year, with 13 senior and eight juvenile events, thanks to the outstanding work by the committee of Ivan Wilson, Irwin Steel, Robert Gourley, Mervyn Baird and George Chapman.
The 2012 tournament, which saw many entries from throughout Co Donegal and nearby Ulster counties, took place in Quigley's Point Community Centre, Knowhead and Greenbank church halls.
The highlight of the Saturday night finals was the Greenbank Senior Challenge Cup, where Mark Topping (Dublin), Irish senior player, and William Gourley (St Canice's) proved too strong for the Macbeth brothers, Alan and Ian (Raphoe).
Ivan Wilson, on behalf of the Greenbank tournament committee, thanked all those who sponsored the tournament and provided perpetual cups, those concerned with the use of the halls and the ladies who provided the tea during the two-week tournament, as well as all the competitors who supported the tournament and made it such a success.
