County Tyrone 1.
Plymouth Argyle 3.
COUNTY Tyrone's young hopefuls got their 2010 Milk Cup campaign underway in the same manner as their 2009 counterparts - with a defeat to Plymouth Argyle at Limavady.
And Paul Kee's charges couldn't have wished for a worse start. Straight from the kick-off, Plymouth launched the ball up field and Tyrone keeper Jack Boggs rushed out and brought down the Plymouth forward. The referee had no option but to point to the spot and Plymouth's River Allen tucked away the penalty.
Tyrone didn't drop their heads and settled into the game. Tom Carlin - dangerous throughout on the left - put in a good cross on five minutes only to see Aaron Patterson denied a header at the back post by some last-ditch defending.
And a few minutes later, it was a similar story, when Kyle Harte didn't gamble and couldn't make the most of Carlin's low cross.
Tyrone continued to push forward and won a corner on 16 minutes. Liam McGillian put in a good delivery for Aaron Patterson, whose brother Rory has just signed for Plymouth's first team. Unfortunately, Patterson Junior couldn't get his header on target on this occasion.
Plymouth came back into the game and had chances through River Allen and Lloyd Jones but it was Tyrone who finished the half stronger, with McGillian and Carlin providing ammunition from the wings, supported by Jamie Glackin and Gary Henderson from midfield.
Tyrone's hopes of getting back into the game took a major blow three minutes into the second period when Plymouth doubled their lead.
Kristian Gibson lost possession and Plymouth's Tyler Harvey drove forward and shot from 30 yards. His effort looped high over Boggs, who had no chance.
And five minutes later, it was 3-0. Plymouth worked the ball well down the right and Lloyd Jones got on the end of the cross, heading past Boggs.
Tyrone showed great spirit and continued to attack and they eventually got the goal they deserved on 48 minutes. From a free-kick on the left touchline, Jamie Glackin delivered a pin-point cross for Jamie Harney to head home and give Tyrone hope of a comeback.
Plymouth began to run out of ideas and their attacking threat was snubbed out by the Tyrone defence, in particular Sean Connolly. Tyrone built on this and as time ran out, they had several great chances, mostly from set-pieces.
Kristian Gibson saw a long-range drive deflected wide and from the resulting corner, Patterson headed over when unmarked.
You got the feeling that if Tyrone could get one goal, they could get two or maybe three. And in the dying moments, Glackin again put in two lovely crosses - both for Matthew Buchanan - both headed over.An opening defeat for The Juniors, but plenty of positives to take away.
