Omagh overpower Moy to reach quarter-finals
Thursday, 1 July 2010
Omagh 0-11
Moy 0-4
OMAGH cruised through to the last eight and a Target Express Tyrone SFC quarter-final meeting with Ardboe when they packed too much power for Moy at Loughmacrory.
Former Derry boss Paddy Crozier's first taste of Tyrone championship football was a pleasant and enlightening experience, but he knows his players will have to step it up if they are to get the better of last year's beaten finalists.
There were many impressive displays on an encouraging evening for the St Enda's, particularly in attack, where county minor star Conan Grugan, Dean O'Neill and Conor O'Donnell gave the Moy defence a testing time.
Joe and Justin McMahon also made a big impact, overshadowing their county colleagues, who, with the exception of Philip Jordan, struggled to get into the game.
Despite playing against the wind, Omagh hit the first three scores. Cathal McCarron converted a 35 metre free, and Gary Taggart added another point to finish off a neatly worked move involving Conor O'Donnell, McCarron and Dean O'Neill.
O'Neill was again at the centre of the action, transferring to Joe McMahon, whose cross was palmed over the bar by McCarron.
Moy goalkeeper Barry Gribben had to be on his guard to keep out a dipping shot from Taggart, before Ryan Mellon hit Moy's opening score in the 11th minute from Niall Conlon's pass.
The Tir na nOgs were pressing forward with purpose, but wasted a number of opportunities, with Sean Cavanagh sending a couple of frees wide of the posts.
They narrowed the gap when corner forward Peter Mallon struck an excellent point, and there was a wobbly moment for Omagh when Eunan Deeney sent in a high, dropping ball which Thomas McNicholl contested with goalkeeper Kerril Winters, and the ball came off a post before being deflected wide.
Omagh recovered from that shaky spell for Conan Grugan to convert a 35 metre free, and the teenager added a second from play to open up a three points lead.
Moy's wastefulness continued, and they chalked up nine wides in the first half, before Omagh turned around with a 0-5 to 0-2 lead at the interval.
Omagh stretched further clear through Conor O'Donnell, but suffered a setback when Paddy Doherty, who had already been booked, picked up a second yellow card after just three minutes of the second half.
But Moy failed to capitalise, Dean O'Neill collected in midfield and raced through for an excellent solo point to stretch the lead, and Moy didn't get their first point of the second half until the 17th minute, when centre back Philip Jordan split the posts.
It was Jordan who scored Moy's only other point of the half, and they too were reduced to 14 men when wing forward Thomas McNicholl was sent off for a second booking in the 48th minute.
Omagh were in cruise control, and completed the job with late scores from Hugh Gallagher and O'Donnell.
