Delight as Eugene is selected to represent Ireland in next year’s Special Olympics thumbnail

A LOCAL man's selection to represent Ireland in three different sports at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi next March is causing much excitement among his supermarket colleagues.
Eugene McGeever, who's 42 and has a learning disability, excels at football, basketball and kayaking.
He's worked in Asda Strabane's grocery department for 14 years and last year won the 'Sports Star of the Year with a Disability' award at the Derry and Strabane Sports Awards.
This week, his mum Pat spoke of her delight at Eugene's participation in the games.
"Obviously I'm very proud of him. He's been kayaking for a few years and really enjoys that in particular," she said.
