Sion Mills Strawberry Fair to celebrate 30th anniversary

Thursday, 7 June 2018

THE Strawberry Fair in Sion Mills will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
It will begin with a band parade at 1.30pm on Saturday, June 16, at the Church Field, Melmount Road, Sion Mills.
There will be all of the popular funfair attractions including the fancy dress parade with the 'Strawberry Princess', the bonny baby competition, hoopla, bouncy castle, swing boats, best dog, rickety wheel, cake stall, burger stall, bottle and book stall, face painting, white elephant and treats galore for the kids.
The special guest this year will be Dean Raymond Thompson who was the rector in the parish of Urney who, with the help of a dedicated team, launched the Strawberry Fair 30 years ago.
Rev Jonathan McFarland said: "As the new rector in Sion Mills and Urney, I am looking forward myself, to all the excitement that has made this great community event so popular over so many years.
"At a recent organising committee I asked the question "What is the Strawberry Fair all about?" The answer was unanimous; "This is our way of bringing the whole community together in an event that is fun for all."
"And this is exactly what the Strawberry Fair in Sion Mills has been doing, with great success, over this past generation. It can be too easy to forget that this fun event began back in the dark days of the troubles. It is a tremendous credit to this local community that each year the local residents have joined together in this positive and inspirational story of laughter and celebration of life here in Sion Mills and Urney.
"So, whether you are travelling to join us again in our celebrations this year from Donemana, Belfast, Ballymena or even America we look forward to seeing you at the Strawberry Fair, and it is our earnest hope and prayer that God will grant us fine weather and also the strength and inspiration to carry this great event and this wonderful story of hope, forward to the next generation."
