POLICE in Strabane are appealing for information following a fire and vandalism at Sion Mills Cricket Club.

According to police who are investigating the incident, the club was targeted early on Friday morning, May 11.

Both the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) and the police attended the scene after the alarm was raised by locals.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "On Friday, May 11, police attended Sion MIlls Cricket Club as did the Fire Service.

"Unfortunately someone or some persons have broken into the premises via a rear window and caused damage with paint and have set some fires which were extinguished.

"This appears to have happened on Friday morning however if you saw anyone at the premises on Thursday evening or Friday morning then please call police on 101 and quote serial 740 11/5/18."

Local community worker, Andy Patton, has condemned the incident but says he is thankful that minimal damage was caused.

He also thanked the emergency service for their prompt attendance and praised the vigilance of locals.

"Thanks to the fast thinking of a local resident who saw smoke coming from the pavillion, the fire was kept to a minimum. Our Neighbourhood Watch was alerted by the resident and we alerted the NIFRS and PSNI."

He added: "(The) damage caused was minimal but massive to our local cricket club. We appeal for anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately. If we have an arsonist in our midst they have to be caught.

"Four youths were seen into the area via fields on the Strabane side of the village. We need to identify those individuals."

Anyone wishing to pass on information anonymously can also do so to the independent charity, Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
