POLICE in Strabane are appealing for information after a much-loved family pet suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run incident at the weekend.

'Bruno' the Schnauzer dog sustained injuries to his pelvis and legs when a blue-coloured SUV-type vehicle mounted a grass verge and struck as he was being walked in the Clady area.

The distressing incident unfolded on Sunday morning just after 11am. Having been assessed by a specialist vet in Portadown, the pet pooch is due to get surgery to his rear legs and hip and faces a long recovery, his owner, Brian Bradley said.

Police who are investigating the shocking incident say their inquiries are continuing.

"Police in Strabane received a report at around 4.10pm on Sunday, April 8, of a damage only road traffic collision in Clady.

"It was reported that earlier that day when a woman was walking a dog on a lead on the Hillhead Road a vehicle collided with the animal. It was reported the vehicle involved was blue coloured. Enquiries are ongoing," a spokesperson said.

In an appeal shared widely on social media, Mr Bradley, urged anyone with information or who may have witnessed the offending vehicle in the area to get in contact in a bid to help catch the driver who he described as a "pathetic excuse for a human".

Speaking on Facebook, he said that the culprit not only seriously injured his dog but could also have killed the family member.

"Our little dog Bruno was out walking with a family member on the Hillhead Road, Upper Clady, when a driver of a blue-type SUV car intentionally drove up onto a grass ditch and drove over the back legs and pelvis of our dog which was on a lead. He drove on and didn't even stop or slow down," he explained.

"If anyone has seen a blue-type SUV car going from upper Orchard Road to Hillhead Road onto Bellspark Road to Clady at 11.02am to 11.10am please get in touch with me."

Bruno is now in the hands of the veterinarians and his family hope to have him home within a few days.
